Scribd cuts romance catalog

Scribd (www.scribd.com) is a subscription program for eBooks. Recently, they decided that romance readers are reading them out of house and home, as quoted by Mark Coker of Smashwords. So, the answer to the problem was to cut 80-90% of their most popular, best-selling romance novels to save on costs.

Read about it here: http://blog.smashwords.com/2015/06/scribd-cuts-romance-catalog.html

My books are still there (so far) but many authors had their books disappear overnight.

As a reader, do you use subscription programs?

3 Reasons I Love Self-Publishing

  1. I can write and publish at my own speed; whether that is fast or slow. I have no deadlines except for the ones I set myself.
  2. I am running my own small business. All the decisions are mine. All the benefits are mine, alas all the responsibilities and failures are mine as well.
  3. I am discovering the most amazing self-published authors. Bobby Adair, RJ Kennett, among many others. I’ve discovered some duds too, but that happens in traditional publishing as well.

Have you discovered any amazing self-published books and authors?

R.I.P. Bertrice Small

Anyone who knows me, knows I will go on and on about Skye O’Malley by Bertrice Small. Ms. Small wrote of a heroine who took on Elizabeth I and won. She was my first view of what it meant to write a kickass heroine. And hot?! Her books gave new meaning for me of what a romance novel could be.

Unfortunately, this week the romance world, no, the world as a whole, lost Bertrice Small. At last year’s RWA National in Texas she was awarded the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award. You can view it here on YouTube.

God Bless you, Ms. Small and thank you for so many hours of historical romance enjoyment.

Between Books

I love when I’m in between books. I finished Defend My Love and it is sitting before final edits and publishing. This is where I take a week and clean my office, gather paperbacks to donate, and some mental brainstorming for the next project, or in my case, projects.

Next on the list is Love in the Time of Zombies and Taming Brad, a sequel to Tempting Adam.

Then, plotting on The Single Mommies Clue, my next series.

AJ Nuest – Blog The Book

Another new event at Jill James, romance author. My first Blog The Book post; highlighting a fellow author’s book – today we have AJ Nuest, a fellow TWRP author with her book, Jezebel’s Wish.

Isn’t that a beautiful cover? Here is a little tidbit about the book:

Haunted by nightmares, tormented by guilt, Jezebel came to Redemption Ranch to escape the past—except now she’s stuck in the middle of nowhere with no redemption in sight. When her mother pushes her into riding lessons with local veterinarian Matthias Saunders, Jezebel balks. Sure, the doctor is gorgeous, but he’s completely obnoxious and knows how to push every one of her buttons.

Only her deep connection with The Reverend, a gentle stallion who guards her darkest secrets, has her agreeing to spend any more time with Dr. Saunders. Caring for the stallion is the first bright spot in her life in months, and if being around the horse means she has to deal with Matthias Saunders, then so be it. Surely a city girl like her can handle one country vet—even one with disturbing blue eyes. Can’t she?

Makes you want to know more, doesn’t it: Here is the excerpt:

Jezzy stopped. “I thought I was having a riding lesson.”

“You are.” He nodded toward the empty paddock. “Go in.”

“Go in?” Jezzy propped a hand on her hip. “You sure you know what you’re doing? Because it was my understanding that an actual horse is needed for a riding lesson.”

“Don’t you think it would be wise at this juncture to leave the understanding up to the professionals?”

Jezzy rolled her eyes. “You’re making this way too easy. Professionals? Please. Don’t get me started.”

“Why not? Getting you started is exactly what I’m here for.”

Jezzy’s jaw dropped. She didn’t quite know how to interpret that remark.

He held out the rope. “Now go in. And take this lead line with you.” Steely blue determination glinted in his eyes. There was no way he was going to give in.

Jezzy snatched the lead line from his hand and stormed through the gate, then turned when heclosed it behind her.

He put a foot on the bottom railing and rested against the gate, facing the horizon. “Take the chair to the center of the paddock and sit down.”

“And just exactly how is that supposed to teach me to ride?”

He cocked an eyebrow. “You want out of the deal?”

Jezzy’s fist clenched tight around the lead line. What she wanted was to march back to the
fence and smack his face.

AJ Nuest lives in northwest Indiana with her loving husband and two beautiful children. She is the author of two contemporary romance novels.

Blog a Book – Cold Truth by Mariah Stewart

Cold Truth is a startling study of murder in a small town. Once a victim of a vicious crime, Cassie Burke is now a homicide cop. She is joined by FBI agent Rick Cisco to hunt down the Bayside Strangler, a killer who has struck in this small town before.

I loved the characters of Cassie and Rick and their growing relationship in the midst of murder. The other people in this small town all banded together to protect each other…or do they?

Great read. A++  Jill James

Blog a Blog – A Writer’s Mind

A Writer’s Mind, Sky Purington’s blog is a cool spot. I love the tranquil color and author interviews.

Here is Sky’s message to her blog readers:

Welcome to my blog! Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and read what’s on my mind. I’ve a vicious sense of humor, an apprecation for romance and a mad addiction to writing. Shall we gab?

So, if you like to gab, give A Writer’s Mind a try.  Jill James
