The Coffee Break Guide to Social Media for Writers by Amy Denim

The Coffee Break Guide to Social Media for Writers
by Amy Denim

Book cover for The Coffee Break Guide to Social Media for WritersRecently I was on a Yahoo loop and someone mentioned they had a blog post by the author for the above named book. I love How-to books, especially about writing and being a writer. I love social media. But, this book promised a coffee break usage of social media. I needed that. So I went over to BN.com and ordered it in paperback. For How-to books I like writing on the pages and using highlighters, it also comes in eBook.

This book is everything it promised and more. The author’s voice is friendly and funny, just enough quirky to make reading the subject extra-fun. I just finished Chapter 3 and already I found a tip that I would not have known in a million years and more than made up for the price I paid for the book.

In Blogging; Using pictures in your blog.

Tip — When you post a picture, you can use the caption and the description to attribute the pic. Use the alt text to describe the picture for your blind or visually impaired readers. Yeah, they read blogs too, but instead of reading with their eyes, they read with their ears. Instead of seeing the picture, they get to hear a description of it. If you don’t fill in the alt text all they get is “picture” — boring. More inclusive means more readers.

I’m highlighting and writing all over the pages and I can’t wait to put this tip and more to good use.

Book Review – Relentless Pursuit – Adrienne Giordano

Book Description from Amazon.com

You call this a mission?

Yeah, ex-Army Ranger and Taylor Securities operative Billy Tripp screwed up. So instead of being assigned to a dangerous international mission, he’s sent to babysit a pricey necklace at a trendy South Beach hotel. The only bright side to the assignment is working with the manager, smoking-hot hotel heiress Kristen Dante.

Kristen’s worked hard to build her father’s Miami hotel into a jet-set destination. She’s confident in business but not so much with men. What could a sexy guy like Billy want with her when he could have someone like her beautiful, party-girl sister?

There’s a reason Billy’s known as Mr. Relentless. He doesn’t give up. Not on a job, or on the woman he wants. So when three luxury cars go missing from the hotel’s lot, Billy sets out to find the thief. Suddenly, he has a case with the risks he thrives on. But when his investigation leads to Kristen being threatened, the real danger is losing his heart.

I really, really enjoyed this book from the very first page. Billy is a security expert with ADD. I loved that about him. He has no filter on his mouth and just spouts off with whatever he is thinking. He is so cool!!

Kristen is kinda sad at the beginning of not realizing how amazing she is, until Billy shows her. They are so right for each other.

The car thefts add an element of danger and excitement to the story.  I love seeing the rich world of hotel ownership, but the daily work that does into running it as well. But most of all I loved getting to know Billy and Kristen. A 5 star read.

New Release – Dangerous Shift

Dangerous Shift

is now live as an eBook. I’m working on the paperback and just waiting for the cover. It is the book of my heart and I was really excited to see it become a book and be available for sale. I wrote this book in 2007 and took it out from time to time to try to hook an agent or to tweak here and there.

Finally I decided if I wanted it to be a book I would have to self-publish. So I did!!!

HE IS MR. BY-THE-BOOK, WITH A SECRET…
Shapeshifters live among us but remain unknown to most people except for the highest echelons of law enforcement, the military, science, and medical fields—until now.

SHE IS A LOOSE CANNON WITH AN ATTITUDE PROBLEM…
When a fatal virus strikes Shapeshifters all over the West coast, including members of the Shapeshifter Task Force in San Laura, California, reinforcements are called in from around the United States.

TOGETHER, THEY JUST MIGHT CATCH A KILLER
Lt. Nikki Hill of Missouri comes to San Laura and is partnered up with Lt. Sean Evans. They quickly butt heads on everything from proper police procedures to the moral ethics of euthanasia. They can’t seem to get a lead on the serial killer even as members of their own families are stricken with the virus. Excerpt – Dangerous Shift

Dangerous Shift is coming soon, this week or next, waiting for cover. Doing the final run-through so thought I would tempt you with a little teaser–the Prologue. Yes, it has a prologue, sue me!! I like them. Jill

Prologue

Fort San Laura Army Base

San Laura,California

May 2016

The sound of boot heels echoed up and down the hospital corridor. All marched past the closed door, none brave enough to stop at this room. Sean Evans turned away as tears rolled down his ex-partner Colin Rodriguez’s face. The man sat by his fiancée’s bedside, her hand clasped in his, waiting for her to die.

Sean stared at the dying woman. Paulette’s red hair was the only color in the monochrome hospital room. Colin’s hand shook as he brushed the hair back from Paulette’s sweaty face. The virus wreaked havoc on the young woman.

Sean swallowed rising bile as the young Shapeshifter in the bed screamed. Her flesh boiled beneath the surface, and she screamed again. Her back arched off the bed. For months now, The Shapeshifter task force had been working to track down the cause of the virus and it finally struck close to home, killing two of their own. First, his own partner, Barry, and now Paulette.

Her fingers turned into talons that dug into Colin’s hand. Blood dripped from the cuts onto the crisp, white sheet. Colin held her hand; the only sign of his pain was the grimace on his tanned face.

Sean rubbed his burning eyes, surprised to find tears on his own cheeks. He scrubbed the wetness away and raked his fingers through his hair. His tears wouldn’t help Paulette or Colin. Nothing could help them now. His hands clenched into fists at his side. He ached to punch a wall, anything to kill the tension in the room.

A scream built in his throat. Just last week he had sat here, forced to watch the young man, new to the task force, breathe his last. He stared into the ceiling lights, his eyes watered with the brightness. He repeated his personal mantra of calm and cool until his emotions mellowed, until they no longer threatened to overwhelm him.

He turned his head as Paulette’s screams died down to whimpers. She had lost all control of her shifting. She grew fur and it disappeared. Her head changed shape as she shifted into a canine form, then a feline form, then back to her own. Her limbs flopped against the mattress as she convulsed. The shifting now happening every few seconds.

Colin threw himself across her body as if he could stop the tragedy from its conclusion.

“Noooo.” His voice ricocheted across the room and down the hall.

Sean rushed to his best friend’s side and ripped him up off of the dying Shifter. No one had discovered yet how the virus was transmitted. They didn’t need masks and gloves anymore, not in the last several months at least, but no one wanted to find out what full-body contact might do.

Colin struggled against Sean’s hold. Tears blurred Sean’s vision as Paulette struggled to breathe, and Colin’s cries became anguished sobs. His shoulders shook under Sean’s hands.

The monitor blared as Sean searched Paulette for any life signs and found none. Her chest didn’t move. She was gone. Just like Barry. Just like all the other Shifters in the past few months.

Sean turned away as Paulette’s flesh jellified and sank into the mattress, only a slight bump under the covers to show a human being had been there.

Colin’s anguish pierced his soul, and when Colin threw himself across the bed again.  Sean didn’t bother to stop him.  What did it matter when his friend had just lost his partner and the love of his life?

The sounds of harsh breaths and sobs still echoed in Sean’s ears when the door opened and the Captain of the Task Force rushed in. Sean turned to the man and shook his head.

Captain Connors motioned for Sean to talk to him outside. Sean shot a quick look to Colin and followed the captain outside to the hallway.

“Lt. Evans, with Robertson’s death today, added to the others, the task force is low on numbers. We will need to send word to the other Task Forces and ask for reinforcements.”

Sean’s hands formed into fists at his side. The human captain made no bones about his dislike of Shapeshifters, but Paulette’s body wasn’t even cold yet and he drudged up business decisions.

He took deep breaths and relaxed his hands. As the lead Lieutenant in the Task Force, business took priority. Even over death.

“Will you send a request to the Southwest office in Las Vegas?” His own task force office covered the Northwest—Northern California, part of Nevada, and all of Oregon,Washington state, and Idaho.

The captain shook his head. “A few cases have been reported in Los Angeles. We can’t risk it. I’ll request someone from the Midwest. No cases have been reported yet out there. There is a small task force in Columbia,Missouri, an hour outside St. Louis.”

Blog The Book – Badwater by Toni Dwiggins

I discovered this Indie book on the Kindleboards. The author was working on a blurb for her new book and mentioned how easy the other one had been. Someone asked her about the other blurb, which was:

Forensic geologists Cassie Oldfield and Walter Shaws embark on a perilous hunt–tracking a terrorist who has stolen radioactive material that is hotter than the desert in August. He threatens to release it in America’s most fragile national park, Death Valley.

But first he must stop the geologists who are closing in.

As the hunt turns dangerous, Cassie and Walter will need grit along with their field skills to survive this case. For they are up against more than pure human malice. The unstable atom–in the hands of an unstable man–is governed by Murphy’s Law. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

And it does.

I went and bought it right then. I was sucked in from the first page. I learned about forensic geology, the topography of Death Valley, one of the US’s most unique National Parks. I visited Death Valley as a kid and was instantly fascinated by its harsh beauty. It is like visiting a different planet.

Ms. Dwiggins book is part geology lesson and part ecological thriller. The writing in this book brought the characters of Cassie and Walter to life. With the twists and turns you are never sure who are the bad men and women and who are the good. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I hope it is every bit the roller coaster ride of excitement that Badwater: The Forensic Geology series was. AA++ for an excellent read.
