Judge a Book By Its Cover Contest

I don’t enter a lot of contests, but I love the JABBIC Contest and entered this year with Love in the Time of Zombies. I would love your vote, Elaina Lee of For The Muse Designs did a wonderful cover. I’m in SF/F/P category.

The JABBIC Readers’ Choice (that’s Judge A Book By Its Cover) is open to the public.

The JABBIC bookseller judges have had their say. Now it’s time for you to have yours.

Fire up your laptop, tablet, or phone and browse to the JABBIC Readers Choice page to start logging your votes. It’s easy and fast–and anonymous. (But you probably want to be on a broadband connection. We load up all the entries in each category on a single page.)

Just click the genre category at the top and prepare to be wowed. Don’t be shy. If you love a cover, give it a 5. If it doesn’t quite turn you on, score it as a 1.

This contest is great if you’re trying to figure out what makes an appealing cover since it is judged by booksellers who probably see thousands of covers every year. Their winners will be announced after the public has voted.

The Readers’ Choice judging will be open until midnight, February 12.

Thanks, Jill James, romance author

I Finaled!

So, my RWA chapter was having a contest. I usually try to be a judge for contests at least 2-3 times a year to give back all the support and help I had along the way of my writing journey. I got seven entries and they were all good to excellent. I decided to enter a manuscript too. More along the lines of “donate twenty bucks to my chapter” kind of thing. Not that I’m not proud of my writing, but I’m self-publishing now so eventually that story would find its way to Amazon and others.

So what happened? I finaled!! (never sure, one L or two?)

Now, Ghostly Intentions goes to the final round judge (editor with a publisher) and I’m all butterflies in the stomach!! I really thought I was past all that when I decided to self-publish, but I guess not! No matter what happens, it was a fun contest to judge and enter. One of the best run I’ve seen in a long time. I got this beautiful badge to show off.

NOW, It’s all about the cookies!!

My favorite part of Christmas is making cookies. My mom truly got into the spirit of Christmas with her cookie baking. We would make twenty to thirty dozen cookies each Christmas. They were given to the neighbors, office workers, and our relatives back east. My fondest memory is that no matter what day we started making cookies my mom would be wearing black pants. LOL By the time we were done, they were covered in white flour.

Chocolate Chip, Sugar, Butter, Jam Thumbprints, Walnut cookies, any new cookie recipe she had clipped out of a magazine. Of all the cookies over the years, my favorites will always be the Butter Cookies. The family recipe had been passed down the generations; I got it from mom and she got it from her mother, who got it from her mother. Grandma Bessie Svehla. The original cookie recipe came from Bohemia; now the Czech Republic.

This recipe calls for lots of butter and lots of upper body strength to stir the dough. LOL

butter cookiesGrandma Svehla’s Bohemian Butter Cookies (Mom never wanted me to share the family recipe, but I believe great food should be shared.)

1 pound of butter

1 1/4 cup of sugar

1 egg

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (lemon or almond are nice too.)

4 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

Mix butter and sugar until creamed together. Add egg and vanilla and mix.

Slowly add flour and baking powder. Mix completely. Refrigerate for an hour.

Drop by spoonfull on to greased cookie sheet. Mash with wet fork for pattern on top. Sprinkle with colored sugar.

Bake 7-9 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes about six dozen cookies.

Spring Bling Fling – Wrapup day

Thank you everyone for visiting my blog during the Spring Bling Fling.

Yesterday’s question – Unfortunately false. When I watched Neil Armstrong step onto the surface of the moon on television I knew there was one thing I wanted to be – the first woman astronaut. Although that opportunity has passed me by, along with colonizing the moon or Mars, I still yearn for new and exciting places – hence I’m now a writer and can go distant places any time I sit down at my computer keyboard.

Winners of the bangle bracelets are: Beth Yarnall and Laura Kaye

Ladies, please send your snail mail address to jill@jilljameswrites.com and I will get them out to you.

Thank you everyone for playing….Jill

Spring Bling Fling – Day 5

Onto Day 5, our last.

In my book, Tempting Adam, Adam learns of Yvette’s lies and is devastated. He doesn’t believe he will ever understand why she chose to lie. For this contest I will give you one statement about myself, each day this week, Monday through Friday. In the comments, state whether you believe it is a truth or a lie. Tomorrow I’ll let everyone know whether it is true or false and the two winners each day of some pretty bangle bracelets from India. Just leave truth or lie, or true or false, in the comments.

Win or Lose

By nature, I’m a very competitive person. I’m a poor winner and an even more poor loser. I’m well aware of this fact and I’ve been fighting it my entire life. I’ve gotten much better. I still love the thrill of winning but I’m much more gracious in defeat and genuinely happy for the winner.

Yesterday the Golden Heart announcement calls went out from RWA. Now, I was hoping to final because I believe in the story I entered. I think it is good, unique, and original. No call. When I receive my scores in 4 to 6 weeks we’ll see what the judges think. LOL

So, I did spend some time at home yesterday hoping the phone would ring. But it didn’t. Yes, I was bummed. Everyone is allowed their moment of a pity party. But for the first time, I didn’t feel like I didn’t final. My story didn’t final. I refuse to be defined by one story I wrote. I am more than that. I have plenty of stories inside me to tell and maybe next time it will be the story that finals.

So, congratulations to all the GH and Rita finalists. This is your year. Enjoy every moment of it.

How do you deal with a setback or defeat?

Jill James
