Do You Feel Lucky?

Beginner’s luck, luck of the draw, bad luck, good luck, I feel lucky, luck of the Irish.

Recently, JA Konrath wrote a blog post called Maybe You Suck. A post about the role luck plays in publishing and by extension; life. The arguments have gone back and forth on whether it is luck or they don’t believe in luck. You should read it. The comments are as good as the post.

You can work your butt off, write the best book in the world, but if no one sees it does that make it bad? Like the old shampoo commercials, you can publish a book, someone sees it and tells two friends, and they tell two friends, and so on and so on. To me, that is luck; either good or bad.

Do you believe in luck in your successes and failures?

No blog today!

I’ve been really good doing this blog twice a week for quite a while, but Saturday and today was Oakland A’s ballgames. Go A’s!!! So no blog today.

But I did add 500 words to zombie book, so not a total loss. LOL

The Passive Voice – Two Different Worlds

The Passive Guy has a great blog post. He was able to attend a debate on the evils of Amazon. I tried to watch the video of the event but the audio was so low that I couldn’t hear it even turned all the way up on my computer. From the comments on the event and at TPG’s blog, I didn’t miss much. Amazon Derangement Syndrome is alive and well in New York City.

It all started with the tree frogs — Jill James

The idea for Dangerous Shift came like the proverbial light bulb moment while I was watching Jurassic Park for the umpteenth time with the kids. It is one of our favorite movies. In the movie Dr. Grant (Sam O’Neill) is explaining to the kids how the dinosaurs reproduced while all being female. The scientists in the story retrieved dinosaur DNA from insects trapped in amber. But the DNA had missing strands. So the strands were added from Amazon tree frogs. Dr. Grant explains that some tree frogs can change genders if the need of the group requires more of one gender or the other. In that way, the dinosaurs, seeing a need, also changed to have some males for reproduction requirements.

So, I’m sitting there and I’m thinking, “Wow, too bad humans can’t do that.” Wait, I’m a writer. They can if I say they can. LOL So a germ of an idea was born. Have shifters with the ability, not to shift to animalistic traits, but gender-blending traits. What if you could have a yin to your yang of personality traits? What if a man didn’t need a feminine side to understand women, what if he could take on that form, and be a woman? What if in a time of danger a woman could transform to have the upper body strength of a man?

In my story, Dangerous Shift, the characters have two names; one for their female form and one for their male form. So Lt. Nikki Hill is also Nick Hill. Lt. Sean Evans is also Shauna Evans. Writing a story where Nikki and Sean, Nick and Shauna got a happily ever after was some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing.

The Next Big Thing by Jill James

My lovely, best friend Lee Lopez coerced nicely asked me to participate in The Next Big Thing Blog Hop. She answered the questions below on her blog, and then tagged me to do the same and then name names. Hahahahaha! I’ve already done this once so I will answer the questions but I take the 5th on naming names!

1. What is the working title of your book or story? Love in the Time of Zombies.

2. What is a one-sentence synopsis of your book? Emily Gray found love and purpose the day the zombies came.

3. Where did the idea for the book come from? I’ve been on a zombie watching and reading kick for about 18 months now and I love The Walking Dead so I was thrilled to try my hand at a zombie urban fantasy.

4. What genre does your book fall under? urban fantasy and horror. If you want just zombies be warned; there is love and romance. If you want just romance be warned; there are ooey-gooey zombie parts.

5. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Alyssa Milano for Emily Gray. I like that she looks kickass and fragile at the same time. Alex O’Loughlin for Seth Ripley, the truck-driving poet. He is tough but sensitive.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? self-published.

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? It is taking about 4 months.

8. What other books would you compare this story to, within your genre? Married with Zombies by Jesse Petersen.

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book? I’m loving all things zombie lately. I believe if you can find love in a world with flesh-eating zombies, renegade mobs, and a shortage of needed resources, how hard can it be to find true love in the real world?

10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? Although there is a big tale of the end of the world as we know it, at heart I’m a romance writer, so there will be a happily-ever-after.

If you would like to participate, take the 10 questions and post on your own blog. Come back and let us know where the blog post is so we can enjoy!!!

2012 in review

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,400 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 7 years to get that many views.

Click here to see the complete report.

Thanks for making 2012 such a fun time on my blog.
