NOW, It’s all about the cookies!!

My favorite part of Christmas is making cookies. My mom truly got into the spirit of Christmas with her cookie baking. We would make twenty to thirty dozen cookies each Christmas. They were given to the neighbors, office workers, and our relatives back east. My fondest memory is that no matter what day we started making cookies my mom would be wearing black pants. LOL By the time we were done, they were covered in white flour.

Chocolate Chip, Sugar, Butter, Jam Thumbprints, Walnut cookies, any new cookie recipe she had clipped out of a magazine. Of all the cookies over the years, my favorites will always be the Butter Cookies. The family recipe had been passed down the generations; I got it from mom and she got it from her mother, who got it from her mother. Grandma Bessie Svehla. The original cookie recipe came from Bohemia; now the Czech Republic.

This recipe calls for lots of butter and lots of upper body strength to stir the dough. LOL

butter cookiesGrandma Svehla’s Bohemian Butter Cookies (Mom never wanted me to share the family recipe, but I believe great food should be shared.)

1 pound of butter

1 1/4 cup of sugar

1 egg

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (lemon or almond are nice too.)

4 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

Mix butter and sugar until creamed together. Add egg and vanilla and mix.

Slowly add flour and baking powder. Mix completely. Refrigerate for an hour.

Drop by spoonfull on to greased cookie sheet. Mash with wet fork for pattern on top. Sprinkle with colored sugar.

Bake 7-9 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes about six dozen cookies.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to be entered in the contest!

Tell me your favorite holiday memory!

  1. Oh, that sounds delish, Jill! One of my favorite traditions is actually a Thanksgiving Day thing – as we’re eating, we each pick someone (everyone picks someone different) and we tell them why we’re thankful to have them in our lives. It gets silly and sentimental…and it’s just fabulous.

  2. Cookies are my favorite dessert and these sound great! My favorite holiday memory is that my parents for the past 20 years have hosted a Christmas brunch at their home with massive food and lots of laughs. To this day, they still do it and it avgs. about 30-40 people per year. sharon(at)

One of my favorite Christmas Romance Books is The Untamable Rogue by Annette Blair! The story is about Ashford Blackburne Fifth Earl and he has to get married and get his willing bride pregnant before Christmas or his grandfather won’t let him inherit his money. Ash truly needs to inherit the money because his late father squandered it all away and he is taking care of his mother. After getting stood up at the alter, again, Ash and his friends go to the local pub where the owner plays a drunken Ash in a card game…his consolation prize is the pubs daughter Larkin, who he wants to get ride of. Ash has to learn to forgive…Larkin has to learn how to trust…can two completely different people find love together. This is a cute, extremely funny, romantic story with a surprise Christmas ending!

    Love the recipe.
One of my happiest Christmas memories was the first Christmas after I became a mother. Of course, my 6-week old son wasn’t aware, but it just made Christmas really special.
Thank you for the chance to win some giveaways!
    Merry Christmas.
